‘Balyaspandanam’ in Anganwadis: Comprehensive Health Drive to Ensure Child Nutrition and Care

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Women and Child Development is launching a three-month campaign titled ‘Balyaspandanam’ to identify nutritional deficiencies and health issues among Anganwadi children and ensure necessary corrective measures. Guided by the motto ‘Healthy Childhood – Strong Future,’ the government aims to strengthen healthcare for children in a more scientific and comprehensive manner. The drive focuses on evaluating the health and nutritional status of children across Anganwadis in the state and initiating appropriate follow-up actions.

As part of the initiative, parameters such as height, weight, physical measurements, and nutritional status will be thoroughly screened. Services of healthcare workers from nearby Primary Health Centres (PHCs) will be utilized for this purpose. The first phase of health screenings is targeted for completion by September 20. Subsequent interventions will be implemented after compiling and analyzing the data collected during these check-ups.

If children requiring specialized medical or nutritional care are identified during the screening, necessary follow-up treatment and care will be guaranteed. Based on the gathered data, individual nutritional needs will be assessed to make required adjustments in their dietary routines. Strict measures will also be taken to maintain privacy and data security regarding the children’s health records.

Instructions have been issued to 258 Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs) across Kerala for the smooth coordination and supervision of the project. The scheme will benefit children across 33,120 Anganwadis statewide. ‘Balyaspandanam’ has been incorporated into the state government’s 100-day action plan, particularly against the backdrop of reported nutritional deficiencies among children in tribal and backward regions. The initiative aims to guarantee health and nutrition while enabling early detection of potential health issues.
